A Lesson Learned

 In the halls of Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies, there was a boy named Jordan. He was always known for being able to make friends with anyone and always had an easygoing personality. However, behind his cheerful attitude, Jordan harbored a deep-seated fear of failure.

As a senior, Jordan was determined to secure a scholarship to pursue his dream of studying in Information Systems. Many nights were spent studying textbooks, and many weekends were devoted to extracurricular activities that would strengthen his resume. Jordan's grades were very good, but the pressure he placed on himself made it impossible for him to get the full enjoyment of his high school experience.

One day, as Jordan sat in the school library, going over calculus equations, he overheard a conversation between two teachers, Ms. Fayn and Mr. Zay. They were discussing the importance of balance in a student's life and how academic success should not come at the expense of personal growth.

Intrigued by their words, Jordan decided to seek advice from Ms. Fayngersh, a seasoned educator known for her wisdom.

"Ms. Fayn, do you have a moment?" Jordan asked tentatively.

"Of course, Jordan. What's on your mind?" Ms. Fayn replied warmly.

Jordan hesitated for a moment before opening up, "I've been pushing myself so hard to get this scholarship, but I feel like I'm missing out on so much. Is it wrong to want both academic success and a life outside of school?"

Ms. Fayn chuckled, "Jordan, you've stumbled upon a truth many only realize later in life. Success is about more than grades and accolades. It's about finding a balance that enriches your overall well-being. Tell me, what do you enjoy doing outside of academics?"

"Well, I used to love videography, and I miss spending time with my friends," Jordan admitted.

With a smile, Ms. Fayn shared a story, “I was once challenged with the decision to succeed academically or live my teenage life to the fullest. I deeply regret my decision of pursuing academics and leaving my teenage years to waste. I hope you can understand and find a balance between academic pursuits and personal well-being.”

Taking this advice to heart, Jordan began to reassess his approach to life. He continued to work hard academically but started to allocate time for activities he truly enjoyed. He joined the school journalism club, rekindling his love for filming moments. He also spent more time with friends, realizing the importance of social connections. He attended Halloween parties and found new friends.

As the scholarship application deadline loomed, Jordan felt a newfound sense of ease. Rather than solely focusing on being the perfect candidate, he presented a more authentic version of himself in his application.

A few weeks later, Jordan excitedly approached Ms. Fayngersh, holding a letter. "I got the scholarship, Ms. Fayngersh! But more importantly, I've learned that success isn't just about grades. It's about embracing life and the experiences that make us who we are."

Ms. Fayngersh smiled, "I knew you had it in you, Jordan. Congratulations! And remember, this lesson will serve you well beyond high school."

As Jordan embarked on his college journey, he carried this lesson with him, knowing that a fulfilling life is woven from both successes and failures, academic achievements and personal joys. The story of Jordan became an inspiration for his peers, a reminder that the pursuit of success should be accompanied by a mindful embrace of life's rich and diverse experiences.
